Field hockey positions

In this post I’d like to tell more about my experience in field hockey photography, and in particular about the shooting positions. i numbered them with 1, 2, 3, and 4. 1 being the best spot and 4th the less use (because there are no real bad spots here). Be aware there are some factors on why i choose a certain side of the field. this in case of hard sunlight, weird shadows of tries or stadium and so on.

Position 1: theoretic the most safe spot to be as photographer, you don’t want you camera being hurt by the hard ball. (or your own teeth for that matter). Here the action is realling coming your way , offensive players running towards the circle to make their shot, or in search for there team players. Here you can shoot all kinds of action. penalty corners, long corners, keeper action, goals, celebration and so on. Really my favorite spot!

Position 2: It depends on what lens you have, but this is also a great spot to shoot offensives players come running towards you on the sideline. Its harder to shoot good circle action because of the backs that are probably turned to you. but with a bit longer lenses you can snap the players coming into the circle on the other side of the field. Great spot for penalty corners (maybe even better then pos1.)

Position 3: Here you can shoot some more defense and offense. Standing here you have a bit more overview, and a bit longer reach then next to the goal.

Position 4: for the best overview go in the middle. Great for starts of the games, or playing with DOF (Depth Of Field) when players run in a straight line.
